SUMMER SCHOOL CLASS DESCRIPTIONS A-Z
Architecture Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 3-5 Learn to be an architect. We will fabricate and design our own structures from the ground, or cardboard, up. We will use a wide range of materials such as foamcore, cardboard, fabric, wood, plastic, and adhesives, of course, to construct our original plans. Materials Fee: $10.00 Art of Chemistry Jackie Chapman, Grades 1-2 Learn about chemistry while learning about art. We will dye chemicals, mix chemicals, dissolve chemicals, and when we are done we will have made some beautiful pieces of art! We may even eat some of our projects. This is a fun and messy class. Materials fee: $5.00 Art of Collecting Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 Do you like to collect things? We will learn how to creatively collect thing such as stamps, money, seeds, and rocks. We will create books and boxes and containers to keep our collections in. You may start a collection that will keep you happy for the rest of your life! ! Materials fee: $5.00 Art of the Circle Aviva Weiner, Grades 1-2 Learn about this wonderful shape we call a circle. We will study the geometry of the circle, and every day we will create something round. From pizza to round books, come explore the circle with me!! Materials Fee: $5.00 Artful Paper Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 3-5 We will be using different kinds of paper to create works of art through processes such as papier-mache, decoupage, simple origami, pop-up, and collage. Paper is a versatile material and we will explore the limitless ways it can be used to make fun creations. Materials Fee: $10.00 Beginning Guitar Eric Bard, Grades 3-5, 6-9 Interested in learning to the play the guitar? Well this is the place to start, or learn something new if you already have some experience. Learn to play chords, write songs, improvise and express yourself with music. The goal of this class is to give the children an experience that will help them be able to nurture themselves as musicians after the summer has ended. Students must bring their own guitar. Books, Books, Books Aviva Weiner, Grades 1-2 We will make books of all sizes and colors. Our books will be held together with staples, string, rubber bands, or glue. You can write and/or draw and/or use stickers in your books. You will also make a decorated wooden box to store your books in and keep them safe. Materials Fee: $5.00 Boxes, Boxes, Boxes Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 3-9 Do you enjoy decorative containers? If so, this is the class for you. We will be making an exciting array of artistic boxes including mosaic, decoupage, origami, paper, and wood boxes. Materials Fee: $15.00 Collage Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 1-2 We will explore the French art of gluing through paper, fabrics and cardboard to make beautiful creations. This is a tactile, sticky and very fun way to create art. Materials Fee: $ 5.00 Color Fun Vicki Duplessis, Grades 1-2 Come and help me explore the world of color through art, experiment and play. We will study the science of color and all it can do. Learn how to mix colors using different media such as paper, clay, dye, and paint. Materials Fee: $10.00 Comic Book Superheroes Noah & Aron Geldberg, Grades 3-5 Students will learn about their favorite superheroes from comic books, movies and television. The class will cover the history of these popular characters and will enable students to explore their various incarnations in different eras of history and media of publication. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to create their own characters and chronicle their adventures in their homemade comics. Materials Fee: $5.00 Container Gardening Ella Brauer, Grades 1-2, 3-5 We will build a planter box, decorate it with gardening themed poems and art work, and plant an herb garden in it for the whole family to enjoy. Cooking Fun Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 Hope you are hungry!! Enjoy cooking in a kid-friendly environment. Create your own appetizers, desserts, and main dishes. Then, we will eat our delicious masterpieces. Materials Fee: $10.00 Costume/Fashion Design Melanie Watnick, Grades 3-5, 6-9 In this exciting course students will be introduced to the world of Costume and Fashion design. We will explore designing costumes from different periods in history and from different countries, fantasy designs and the ideas behind creating a runway collection. Students will learn about the principles of design and fabric choices that are used by professionals today! Each student will get a chance to create their own designs and will work on their rendering skills through the use of pencil, watercolor and ink. Materials Fee: $10.00 Creative Writing Paulino Fontes, Grades 6-9 Time to put that story down on paper or at least learn how to. In this class we will learn the basics of plot and characterization. We will practice several facets of creative writing from brainstorming for ideas to a polished work. There will be group and private work and critiques. Cultural Art Jackie Chapman, Grades 3-5 Learn art forms of different cultures and regions of the world, along with a brief history of these artistic styles. Use paint, sculpture, fabric and other materials to portray the unique features of art in these cultures. Materials Fee: $10.00 Dance, Dance, Dance Francine Matthews, Grades 6-9 This class is for those students who want to feel the rhythm. We will learn many kinds of dance and movement. We will focus on both classical and modern types of dance but all the while focusing on having fun and expressing ourselves through body language. Decorated Gourds Aviva Weiner, Grades 6-9 In this class students will learn to create millefiori canes using polymer clay. We will use the cross sections of the canes to cover hardshell gourds making one of a kind works of art! Materials Fee: $15.00 Dinosaurs Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 Pterodactyl, Stegosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus, oh my!! Learn about these extinct creatures and the world they lived in. This class will explore the pre-historic realm of these magnificent using books, art and movement. Materials Fee: $5.00 Discover Your World Melissa Brown Bidermann, Grades 1-2, 3-5 In this class students use all their senses to document their worlds at this moment in time. Each child will create a book documenting their world using digital photography, preserving leaves and flowers, writing down favorite family recipes and listening to the sounds of their neighborhood. This class will foster a new awareness in each child of the richness of their everyday worlds. Materials Fee: $15.00 Dungeons and Dragons Alia Weiner, Grades 3-5, 6-9 This classic role-playing game is timeless. Come become whatever you want to become and let the dice decide your fate! No experience required, established characters welcome! We will encourage everyone to create new characters for the campaign, but please feel free to bring in anything you would like to share! Material Fee: $3.00 Express Yourself With Math Haruhiko Cho, Grades 3-5 Forget about numbers. In this class, we will explore how math is used in everyday life. We will study and explore many different art formats to see the relationship between those artworks and math. We will use 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional media to illustrate their own math problem. Materials Fee: $5.00 Fashion Drawing Melanie Watnick, Grades 3-5 Students will learn how to draw a 20 year old female figure in different poses-moving and at rest, then draw realistically looking clothing on the figures. From this skill platform, each student will create their own thematic fashion catalog in color. Materials Fee: $5.00 Filmmaking: Lights! Camera! Action! Talia Geldberg, Grades 3-9 Lights! Camera! Action! Do you have what it takes to be the next Steven Spielberg? Here's your chance to write and direct your own film! We will take you through the many exciting phases of filmmaking and you will even get to star in one of your classmates' films! Materials Fee: $15.00 Fitness Fun Jackie Chapman, Grades 1-2, 3-5 Experience exercise in a fun, exciting way! We'll play games and other activities to have fun and get fit at the same time. Learn some yoga cool-down methods as well! Food Decoration Vicki Duplessis, Grades 6-9 Learn the basics of decorating food such as cookies, cupcakes, appetizers, and centerpieces and then, the best of all, eat them!! This is the right class for you if you like to eat, but not the right class for you if you have food allergies. Materials Fee: $10.00 For the Birds Talia Geldberg, Grades 3-5 We will make and decorate gourd birdhouses and bird feeders, and learn which birds live in our local area. Materials Fee: $10.00 Friendship Bracelets Alia Weiner, Grades 3-5 Learn the art of friendship bracelets. I will show you the stitch from the inside out and will bring you as far towards the goal of total control over the stitch as I can during the class. Explore thick vs. thin bracelets, breaking and reconnecting stitches, directional and color changes and choices about symmetry. Materials Fee: $5.00 Fun With Physics Jackie Chapman, Grades 1-2 Play games and create art using the principles of physics. Learn about the physical laws of how our world operates. Handmade Dolls Aviva Weiner, Grades 6-9 We will create three one of a kind dolls from materials including recycled clothing, beautiful designer fabrics, gourds and corn husks. We will be sewing, gluing, dyeing, lacing, binding and lashing our materials. Materials Fee: $10.00 It's All About Flowers Aviva Weiner, Grades 3-5 Each student will build a flower press which we will eventually cover with flowers and leaves each child gathers. We will use various techniques including pressing, hand drying and desiccation to preserve the flowers used to embellish the presses. Materials Fee: $10.00 Japanese for Beginners Haruhiko Cho, Grades 6-9 Hello; Konnichiwa. In this class we will learn basic Japanese. Several Japanese letters and parses will be introduced everyday through speaking, reading and writing. In addition, we will also discover Japanese culture through stories, TV programs, music, movies and more. Materials Fee: $5.00 Jewelry Explorations Francine Matthews & Caitlin Chapman, Grades 3-5 This class will explore making many types of beads ranging from felt, fimo, and paper. Then, we will spend time learning different types of stringing techniques to make necklaces and bracelets. Materials Fee: $10.00 Journal Workshop Aviva Weiner, Grades 3-9 Create a visual record of your thoughts, feelings and ideas using various art techniques. We will be using decorated papers, paints, pastels, chalks, relief printing, pencils, inks.....a wide variety of expressive media. You will take home a bound journal which you can continue to use until it is full, and then keep for the rest of your life. Materials Fee: $20.00 Kinesiology Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2, 3-5 This class will teach the fundamentals of physical education. The lessons taught will show you how to enjoy being physical through games of personal growth rather than competition. In this class we will improve our gross motor skills through playing various games. Knots!Knots!Knots! Talia Gelberg and Caitlin Chapman, Grades 3-9 Knot yarn, knot plastic, knot, knot, knot. We will be learning the art of crochet, knitting and lanyard making. This is a fun, social class that will help you understand and love the craft of creating wearable art. Material Fee: $5.00 Kumihimo Aviva Weiner, Grades 3-9 Learn to make braided ropes in the traditional manner of feudal Japan, but with contemporary tools. You can make beautiful ropes from acrylic, wool or cotton yarns. There are endless color and pattern variations that you will experiment with. You will keep your tools at the end of the class, so you can braid away all year long! Materials Fee: $15.00 Language and Culture of Mexico Paulino Fontes, Grades 3-5, 6-9 A brief cultural and historical survey of Mexico from pre-Columbian times to the Mexican Revolution and conversational Spanish. We will cover basic Spanish phrases and idioms plus some interesting historical facts on the Aztecs, Conquista, Mexico's search for an identity, the Revolution and a brief art history of the covered time. Learn to Drum Aron Geldberg, Grades 6-9 Learn how to play drums, from the simplest beats to the most complicated percussion parts. Students are encouraged to bring in music that we will dissect as a class. Pupils of all skill levels are encouraged to sign up. Drums are provided for class use only. Literature to Film Aviva Weiner, 6-9 We will read short stories and novellas that were turned into films, and then see the films they inspired. We will discuss how the films stayed true to the original story and how and where the directors and screen writers changed things to make the story their own creative expression. We will discuss the successful adaptations and the not so successful ones as well. Making Musical Instruments Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 If you love to create and groove, this is the class for you. We will be making our own instruments out of a wide array of materials and then using them to make our own music. Come and find your beat! Materials Fee: $5.00 Mask Making Melanie Watnick, Grades 3-5, 6-9 Masks have been used by various cultures throughout time to express feeling and provoke thought in performance art. In this class students will explore mask making and the unique cultures that created them throughout time. Students will also create their own masks through various techniques and styles from paper mache; thermoplastic to using found objects. This class is both educational and creative! At the end of the class students will have several different masks of their own to take home. Materials Fee: $10.00 Modern Art Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 3-9 In this class we will learn, explore and re-create the wonderment of the world of modern art. We will learn, discuss and exercise the media of painting, photography, video and sculpture researching artists such as Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Andy Goldsworthy, and Bill Viola. Materials Fee: $10.00 Mosaic Art Jackie Chapman, Grades 3-5, 6-9 Use the style of mosaic art to create your own gorgeous masterpieces! Make decor for your home including an outdoor welcome sign, tile trivet, and framed mirror. Materials Fee: $10.00 Music Fun Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 Come learn to sing new songs, and have fun singing old songs. We will also learn about many styles of music from all over the world, and the many sounds that can be made with and without musical instruments. Numbers and Clues Ella Brauer, Grades 3-5 Addition, subtraction, fractions, Oh my!! In this class we are taking math to a whole new level. We will hunt for it! So bring all your courage, and all your numbers and let's go on a scavenger hunt. Painting Techniques Jackie Chapman, Grades 1-2, 3-5, 6-9 Analyze famous paintings from various artists, discovering the shapes, colors, sizes and textures in them. Use these techniques to create your own still-life, portrait and scenic paintings! Materials Fee: $10.00 Phun with Physics - Energy Michael Miller, Grades 6-9 What is energy? We hear the term everyday: Energy Drinks, Energy Conservation, Energy Crisis. But what does it mean? In this class we will begin with activities focused on thinking like a scientist. We will test how energy changes forms and consider the implication for creating more efficient machines. Materials Fee: $3.00 Phun with Physics - Waves and Optics Michael Miller, Grades 6-9 What do a slinky and an earthquake have in common? How are radio signals and light from the sun the same? Why do we need glasses? We will investigate these questions through hands-on activities, exploring events that we see every day. Materials Fee: $3.00 Poetry Paulino Fontes, Grades 6-9 There are lots of reasons why you may want to write a poem. Then there are many different types of poems you could write. Without getting too technical, in this class we will learn three types of poems: sonnets, haiku and freeze verse. They may fit most of your needs for a poem. The emphasis of this class is on experimenting and having fun with words. Printmaking Aviva Weiner, Grades 3-9 Learn how to create relief printing blocks, and how to use commercially made blocks. We will be using water based printing inks on paper and boards. One day will be devoted to gyotaku, using whole fish as a printing block! We will also learn how to make simple books from the prints we have made. Materials Fee: $15.00 Rhythm and Rhyme Vicki Duplessis, Grades 1-2 We will explore repetitive story lines and call-and-response songs from around the world such as Who's in Rabbit's House?. Every day we will have fun exploring the relationships between language, rhythm, music and poetry. Rocketry Michael Miller, Grades 6-9 Noah and Aron Geldberg, Grades 3-5 and 3-9 Come and soar with us. In this class you will not only be a structural engineer but an commercial artist. We will build and custom paint our basic rockets before we launch them into the atmosphere. Materials Fee: $30.00 Roller Coasters Noah Geldberg, Grades 3-5 Students will construct miniature roller coasters from everyday building materials and experiment with structure and design with the goal of creating functional models. The class will learn about the unique challenges of engineering and building amusement park rides and will be able to explore their own techniques and compare them with those designed by professionals. Materials Fee: $5.00 Scrapbooking Vicki Duplessis, Grades 6-9 We will be designing scrapbooks that will reflect yourselves including photos of family, friends, pets, etc. These will be your to take home to share with you family and cherish memories forever. Materials Fee: $10.00 Sculpture Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 1-2, 3-5 Learn the art of 3 dimensions through the use of materials such as clay, paper, hydrostone, and wire. We will learn that contemporary sculpture is made from anything. Come and be creative!! Materials Fee: $ 15.00 Shakespeare I and II Melanie Watnick, Grades 6-9 Come one, come all, learn about the most famous playwright of all time! In this two period class we will focus closely on one of his works and tackle his tricky language. This class will involve in depth study of the play chosen and culminate in a short performance of the text. Students will also get a chance to create sets, props and costumes for their production as well. This is an excellent chance to get ahead on subject matter covered in AP and honors English courses! Sketchbook Drawing Melanie Watnick, Grades 3-5 Knowing how to draw well is one of the essential skills for artists. We will build knowledge and discipline creating drawings of expression and amusement. We will draw hands, faces and everyday objects, leaves and flowers, toys, animals and even scenes from our imaginations. Materials Fee: $5.00 Spiders and Insects Francine Matthews, Grades 1-2 The wonderment of creepy crawlers is exciting stuff. In this class we will learn the biology of spiders and insects, how they eat and how they live. Learn not to be afraid but how to be amazed! Materials Fee: $5.00 Still-Life Drawing Melanie Watnick, Grades 6-9 This is a class for students who will want to expand their drawing skills. We will learn how to draw 3 dimensional objects such as cups, bowls, bottles, tea pots, etc. Students will use their new skills to make an extended drawing of five or more objects with light and shadow. This is an excellent fundamentals class. Materials Fee: $5.00 Story Fun Ella Brauer, Grades 1-2 We will be reading a new story everyday and then doing an activity that relates to that story. Come read the wonderful tales written by Eric Carl and Don and Audrey Wood, just to name few and then act, play or create. Materials Fee: $10.00 Surrealism Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 6-9 Come and discover the surreal world. We will be studying the surrealist art movement through writing, group exercises and creative expression. Materials Fee: $10.00 Textile Arts Gretchen Potts-Jones, Grades 3-5 Come and join me in exploring the ancient art of textile dying. We will be using various methods of dying cotton and rayon such as reduction and heat transfer. Students will need to bring their own 100% cotton white and 100% cotton black shirt. Materials Fee: $15.00 Theater I and II Melanie Watnick, Grades 3-5 In this two period class we will agree on a play to study, produce and perform. This class will involve in depth study of the chosen play and end in a short performance of the text. Students will also get a chance to create sets, props and costumes for their production as well. Students must enroll in both classes!!
